In my experience, those who become jw's as adults (not born in) could be described as abusers or abusees. More often than not, they have unresolved issues of abuse from their past and gravitate to the structure of the org to re-experience the controlling, abusive environment of their past as the victim or the perpetrator.
From what I've seen, the more these past abuse issues are dealt with, the less of a hold the org has on a person. I guess that's another reason the org frowns on therapy. Nothing like people being empowered to live their own lives abuse-free!

Say hello to the new guy
by osmosis ini found this web site while researching jws (my immediate family on my dad's side is jw, except for my dad, who was subjected to the programming from birth, and who seems to be caught in some strange world between the jw world and the real one).. for the most part, these are decent, kind, loving people.
the only problem is that they are jws!.
i myself am atheist, so in theory i should them to be atheist also, but i'd gladly settle for steering them into a different form of christianity.. anything but jw.

What happened in the 80's?
by Virgochik invarious posters have mentioned how get-togethers and fun times socializing were frowned upon and discouraged somewhere around the early 80's.
everything changed, as far as the picnics, the dinner parties, etc.
i vaguely recall some connection being made to parties and increased "immorality.

Thanks for that pic OpenFireGlass. It reminds me of a brother I knew who dressed like Don Johnson from Miami Vice. He looked like a complete dork coming to the meetings in his pastel blue suit and white T-shirt and his canvas shoes. He's an elder now. He lost the Miami Vice garb but he's still a complete dork.

I was a teen in the late 80's and we had lots of get-togethers, but they had to be very well chaperoned. If boys and girls were dancing together, often one of the chaperones would slip a wt or awake bound volume between the two to make sure they weren't dancing too close. And of course, bible trivia games were a must. Sigh.
There were lots of skating parties too. There's a public skating rink down by the Toronto harbour and on Sunday nights it was the jw "meat market". Still is to some degree (for all you young lurker dubs looking to hook up). :)

I didn't pay much attention really. As I mentionned, I didn't know at the time who he was. I just recall him being a snappy dresser and being a big man. Tall, great eyes. Very kind.

I met Terence a few summers ago when he was in Toronto filming. He studied with a couple of elders in my congregation and attended meetings occasionally. He commented a lot. He's very articulate and incredibly handsome. Beautiful eyes. I didn't know who he was at the time I met him. Probably better that way. :)

I love my life!!!
by Brigid ini just had an amazing, albeit fairly typical weekend.
i wanted to share with you guys and most especially any who are lurking or worried that life in "the world" leads only to crack addiction, aids, satan worship, etc.. friday: i had a fabulous evening out to a very nice, funky little italian restaurant with my 10 of my friends.
they'd gathered to celebrate my birthday early.

Circuit Ass last weekend

I recall at my last CA before I left last year, the speaker implored the youths to give the organization 3 years of wholehearted devotion and they would see that it is the best way of lie...er...life. :)
